This morning Cuerpos Distintos did a session for the Ecuadorian Police Academy with the mid-rank police officers based on the handbook they developed years ago on inclusive and sensitive policing, with a specific focus on transpeople. Eli was a skillful conductor, in music terms, loved the way she led the session and engaged the trainees, I was invited to contribute my 5 cents as well on hate crimes, which I did (felt bad about not being to converse with the trainees directly in one language, but soon!). The training was special in the sense that the trainees were all differently abled officers: a strategic decision on the part of the human rights trainer of the Police Academy to sensitise these police officers specifically since they themselves are differently abled and therefore could be more understanding of as well as influential on the specific issues relating to the policing in re to transpeople.
Esta mañana el Proyecto Transgénero hizo una capacitación en la Escuela Superior de Policía dirigida a policías y clases, con base en el Manual de DDHH aplicados a la Función Policial, cuya sección de diversidad sexual y género es de autoría de dicha organización. Eli fue una hábil conductora; me encantó el modo en que dirigió la sesión e involucró a las y los alumnos. Fui invitado, yo también, a contribuir con mis cinco centavos de presentación acerca del tema de delitos de odio (me sentí mal de no poder conversar directamente con los policías en su idioma, pero pronto lo haré). El entrenamiento tuvo la particularidad de que los policías asistentes eran personas con capacidades diferentes: una decisión estratégica tomada por oficial instructor de DDHH a cargo del curso, quien considera que sensibilizar a personas cuya realidad corporal es distinta puede ayudar a que reciban los conocimientos con mayor apertura y eventualmente influyan en un adecuado tratamiento policial de las personas trans y sus especificidades.
